EAG’s Northland CAPS Intern, Jamie Phelan, Starts Cornell Leadership Program with Real-World Marketing Experience

EAG’s Northland CAPS Intern, Jamie Phelan

EAG Advertising & Marketing partnered with the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (Northland CAPS) program to provide professional, innovative educational experiences for high school students in the Kansas City Northland. Jamie Phelan, a senior at Liberty High School, Northland CAPS associate in global business and logistics and EAG’s intern, has been researching companies’ brands, writing creative briefs and blogs, learning SEO practices and tools, and working alongside various departments within EAG. The partnership between EAG and Northland CAPS provides students, like Jamie, a fully immersive educational experience in business marketing careers.

Jamie has been interning with EAG since January; however, Northland CAPS is a year-long program. During the program, student associates work on reverse-pitched client projects for local business partners that add meaningful value to companies and our local economy. Student associates learn standard business software and technical skills and work regularly with mentors from the industry. Early career professional skills like project management, creativity and critical thinking, business ethics, teamwork and time management are instructed, role modeled and measured.

“Throughout my internship, observing the culture at EAG has been easy. There is collaboration across all departments within the company. I knew right away that this was the type of dynamic that I want to be immersed in for my future career,” explains Jamie. “The biggest thing I value from this internship is the exposure it has given me to this career field. I have gotten a lot of experience within marketing that not a lot of students get before entering college. This experience has helped me discover a new world of options I have in this career path and it has gotten me thrilled to begin my next chapter.”

Jamie’s next chapter begins in the fall at the University of Missouri—Columbia. She was accepted to the Cornell Leadership Program in the Trulaske College of Business. The Cornell Leadership Program provides high-performing students, like Jamie, with an opportunity to develop leadership skills and business acumen through a carefully designed set of experiences over four years.

“EAG invests in developing and mentoring current and next generation leaders in our community,” says Angela Ridpath, vice president of client services and intern director. “Our program is designed to help students learn the valuable skills and work experiences that will help them be employable in the future.”
